Ever wonder what it’s like behind the scenes at League? Each month, we’ll be featuring one of our talented team members in the League Employee Spotlight series.
Let’s meet Lars, a Benefits Consultant at League:
What did you study and why?
Throughout my whole life I have had a passion for music and as I was looking at options for college I was given the opportunity to attend the University of Illinois and study Music Performance with a focus in classical and chamber music. While attending university I was part of several touring groups and performed across the country in several groups ranging from orchestral to metal.
Everyone always thinks – music to insurance… that makes a lot of sense. But one of the things I enjoyed most about my time as a musician was the public speaking and hustle that went into that lifestyle. When I started with Cigna Healthcare in NYC my manager sat me down and said, “Lars, just think about setting appointments with insurance brokers the same way you did when you were booking gigs for your band.” That’s when a lightbulb went off and the rest is history.
What drew you to League?
I have been in the insurance industry on the carrier side in the United States for the better part of a decade working with all different levels of brokers and consultants and when I met the team at League I could instantly tell that they were building something special. The industry has been stagnant for too long and needs a true disruptor to enter the space and really shake things up. I really believe that we are going to be a driving force behind innovation and positive change in the coming years.
What does a Benefits Consultant do?
As a benefits consultant I work hand in hand with League’s Account Executives to help qualify leads and build a strategy around how we can best meet the client’s specific benefit needs. This involves maintaining knowledge of the products available in each market as well as building relationships with our carrier partners.
What are some of the biggest advantages of having a Benefits Consultant?
My goal is to use my experiences to help simplify the experience for both the employers and employees using our platform. With the approach that we have built, there is a big opportunity to help make utilizing benefits in the US and Canada a much smoother experience for our clients.
What do you love about your job?
I love that I have the full confidence of the team and they trust my instincts on employee benefits. In the short time I’ve been here we’re starting to get into a good rhythm and are building our sales process as a team.
It’s great working for a company that has people from all types of professional backgrounds. It forces me to rethink the way I approach benefits and to get out of my comfort zone.
What three words you think your colleagues would use to describe you in the workplace?
Enthusiastic, generous, optimistic. The team here in Chicago helped me out with these!
What is the one item you would bring with you to a deserted island?
I would bring a guitar. It’s an instrument I have always wanted to be better at playing but for whatever reason life keeps getting in the way. If I was on the deserted island I would have no more excuses and I could learn to shred!!!
