What can life coaching do for me?

We all have them—they’re a part of who we are. Our core values are those intangible qualities, like creativity, independence, learning, respect or partnership, that let us live a more fulfilled life. When you identify the values that are most important to you, you can pinpoint the ones that are present in your life and those that are missing. If you’re not sure what your values are, a life coach can help you rediscover them. Once you understand what they are, and make a commitment to bring them to the forefront of everything you do, you’ll be honouring your true self and being the best YOU you can be.

… see things more clearly by embracing the facts.

Fact and fiction have an annoying habit of getting tangled up with one another and becoming one disempowering truth. Knowing how to separate the two means taking a few steps back, observing, and asking yourself the right questions so you can take the right action. Imagine your best friend saw himself as a failure because he wasn’t financially stable—despite a well-paying job. This kind of thinking sets him up for failure every day. A life coach can separate fact (your friend has great cash flow, but needs help with budgeting) from fiction (your friend is a failure because he can’t hold onto his money). When we step back and review what going on, it’s clear to see that he’s not a failure. He simply needs help with money management.

Ever wish you could take a different path? Good news, you can! In life, we often accept what’s put in front of us instead of asking for what we need or doing something differently. If you want to make a change—successfully—you have to know what you want (or at least what you don’t want). Let’s say you’re bored at work and want an exciting new job, your life coach will ask you to think about what type of career you want. (Think values.) Next you’ll need to determine how you fit, or what your role will be. How will you use your current skills in this new position? What’s needed, if anything, to help you successfully make the switch? Now it’s time to explore new industries that mirror the values that are important to you, then do some research, make new contacts and ask lots of questions. Don’t think you have what it takes? A life coach can help you shift your focus—from thinking about what you don’t have to reinventing yourself and exploring new life paths.

… overcome challenges by appreciating yourself.

How many times have we taken a well-deserved victory and reduced it to luck or chance? Too often we don’t give ourselves credit for our hard work. But when something goes wrong, we run that mistake through our head over and over and over again. Life coaching has a different philosophy: It’s called celebrating you! Celebrate your victories no matter how small. Do a happy dance when you meet a personal goal. Learn how to say “thank you” when someone gives you a compliment. Get used to appreciating yourself and owning your talents. Take a moment and savour a major milestone. These pats on the back become crucial when facing a major challenge. Accessing these moments help redirect your thinking from “How could I have let this happen?” to “What can I do to turn this around?”
